CNN —King Charles III’s first official portrait was unveiled this week, and I’m sure his majesty would agree it’s a stirring sight. Unfortunately for Yeo, Charles and the butterfly, nothing about the portrait has garnered nearly so much comment as its dominant color. Besides these ceremonial outings, Charles has recently been less prominent in British public life than ever, particularly following the announcement in February of his cancer diagnosis. Charles’ private wealth dwarfs that of any other member of his family. Join us on Twitter and FacebookIn the last 10 years alone, that system has reportedly made King Charles more than £60 million ($76 million) richer.

The Ukrainian Army said on Saturday that Russian troops had tried to break through its defenses near the village of Lyptsi, which lies directly north of Kharkiv. It said the attacks had been repelled, but maps of the battlefield compiled by independent groups analyzing publicly available video of the fighting showed that Russian troops had almost reached the outskirts of the village. Ukraine’s Khartia Brigade, which is defending Lyptsi, posted a video on Telegram on Friday afternoon that it said showed Russian soldiers advancing on the village on foot, and attacking in small groups between tree lines. The brigade said it had targeted the Russians with rockets, forcing them to withdraw. Russian troops opened a new front in Ukraine’s northeast a week ago, surging across the border and quickly capturing about 10 settlements in what Ukrainian officials and military analysts described as an attempt to stretch Ukraine’s already outnumbered forces.

And in an effort to correct manufacturing flaws and get production back on track, it announced it's in talks to buy fuselage maker Spirit AeroSystems — a company that Boeing spun off in 2005. Spirit AeroSystems, which is not to be confused with Spirit Airlines, is one of the biggest aerostructure companies in the world with many locations around the globe. "Spirit provides 100% of the fuselages for the world's second-most popular aircraft, the 737. " Over the past few years, there have been a series of manufacturing flaws that have come out of the Spirit AeroSystems factory on some fuselages that are going to Boeing. Spirit, however, also supplies parts to Airbus and other plane manufacturers, making the deal a little complex.

New York CNN —Shareholders of embattled airplane maker Boeing approved a pay package of nearly $33 million for outgoing CEO Dave Calhoun at the company’s annual general meeting on Friday. That’s the highest package ever paid to the company’s CEO and a 45% increase from the $22.6 million he received for 2022. The vast majority of the bump comes from a giant stock bonus granted on top of his more-than-a-million-dollar salary. Calhoun, who has led Boeing since 2020, announced in March that he will leave the company by the end of the year. The shareholder vote on Friday was made to approve Calhoun’s 2023 pay package.

Frontier Airlines said it will stop charging customers a fee to change their flights, taking a page from larger competitors as the Biden administration issues stricter rules targeting so-called "junk fees." Frontier currently charges up to $99 to change flights if the change is made within a week of the trip, according to the airline's website. Larger rivals Delta , American and United scrapped change fees during the Covid-19 pandemic for travelers who were booked in standard economy class and above. "The truth is the big four all have no change fees on the majority of their products, so we were not as desirable," Biffle said. He said change fees were a "top complaint" of travelers.

The union says that flight attendants’ low salaries compared to top airline executives is a prime example of “corporate greed.”New flight attendants at American Airlines start at $27,000 per year. Robert Isom, the CEO of American Airlines, earned $31.4 million last year — 1,162 times more than a new attendant. While President Biden tries to assuage voter concerns about his age in a presidential race that includes the two oldest men ever to seek the White House, a couple of miles away in the U.S. Senate, the gerontocracy remains alive and well — and little commented upon. The recent news that two octogenarians — Senators Bernie Sanders of Vermont, 82, and Angus King of Maine, 80 — are each running for another six-year term generated little in the way of criticism or worry over age of the kind that Mr. Biden has faced. Their races, which both men are likely to win, are a reminder of how the Senate’s roster is chock-full of lawmakers staying in office at an age when most people are well into retirement. At the start of this Congress last year, the average age of elected officials was 64 in the Senate and 57.9 in the House. “They’re not in short supply around here,” Senator Peter Welch of Vermont, 77, said of octogenarians.

Storm Carves Path of Destruction Across Houston
  + stars: | 2024-05-17 | by ( The New York Times | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
A powerful storm tore through Texas on Thursday evening, killing at least four people and battering the state with destructive winds and heavy rain. The force of the storm caused widespread damage in Houston, blowing out the glass windows of ground-level storefronts and downtown high-rises. Nearly a million utility customers were still without power on Friday morning, and officials said that the storm brought winds with speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. With some roads still blocked off, officials have warned people to stay home as they assess the damage and clear debris. Here’s a look at the damage in Houston from the storm.
Locations: Texas, Houston
The storm that hurtled through Houston late Thursday surprised a city long accustomed to bouts of serious weather. The Astros kept playing baseball, even as rain and wind whipped into the team’s closed-dome stadium. Many people, following their evening routines, were caught unaware on bikes or at the gym. Decades-old oak and pecan trees were ripped in two or knocked over at the roots, flattening fences or blocking roadways. Highway billboards buckled, including the Car Wreck Cowboy, a local lawyer whose sign, usually towering over Interstate 45 near downtown, had been flattened into an empty lot.

A chocolate factory and a soda bottling plant set on fire. As protests against French control boiled over this week in New Caledonia, the South Pacific archipelago experienced some of its most intense violence since a civil war decades ago. “I’m in a state of shock, I can’t move,” Lizzie Carboni, a writer who lives in Noumea, the capital, said by phone as the fourth night of protests began on Thursday.
